Dale and Gem Biography

Gem and Dale have developed a reputation as dynamic Argentine Tango teachers and performers in milonguero, nuevo and performance styles of tango.

Originally San Francisco residents, they received their tango training from the stars of the famous show “Forever Tango” most notably Carlos Gavito.  Gem had the opportunity to study with legendary Gavito extensively for several years, incorporating his technique, elegance and musicality into his own dancing and teaching. Initially an expert salsa dancer and instructor, Dale was drawn to tango for its sensuality and passion, later winning the first prize in the first San Francisco Tango Competition in 1998.

They have traveled to Buenos Aires numerous times to perfect their technique by studying with Gustavo Naveira, Juan Carlos Copes, Osvaldo Zotto, Oscar Mandagaran, Chicho Frumboli, Geraldine Rojas, Susana Miller among others.  In addition, Dale has refined her dancing by studying women’s technique with Graciela Gonzales, Marcela Duran, and Lorena Ermocida.

Dale and Gem have developed a teaching method that focuses on strong technique, elegance, balance, and creativity.  The emphasis they give to the woman’s elegance and the man’s understanding of the structure creates the fluidity and partner connection that is the essence of Argentine Tango. As an acclaimed international classical guitarist, Gem’s ability to teach the musicality of tango allows the students to interpret the music, creating an improvised choreography while dancing.  Their versatile repertoire enables them to teach the timeless classic salon tango and the alluring figures of nuevo tango, as well as the dynamics of performance tango.
